Healthline only shows you brands and products that we stand behind.

Our team thoroughly researches and evaluates the recommendations we make on our site. To establish that the product manufacturers addressed safety and efficacy standards, we:
  • Evaluate ingredients and composition: Do they have the potential to cause harm?
  • Fact-check all health claims: Do they align with the current body of scientific evidence?
  • Assess the brand: Does it operate with integrity and adhere to industry best practices?
We do the research so you can find trusted products for your health and wellness.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is ultra-popular at the moment — and, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it’s federally legal, which is great news if you’re interested in trying it out for yourself. But unfortunately, it can be tough to weed out the good from the bad with the mountain of products available on the market.

While we’re just starting to understand the ins and outs of CBD, some initial studies seem promising. There’s evidence that CBD products may have therapeutic benefits, like pain relief.

It’s important to choose products from a reputable brand. But how can you figure out which companies are selling the good stuff? We regularly put out company reviews to help you find quality products from reliable, trustworthy sources.

Medterra is a California-based CBD company that sells a variety of CBD products and is U.S. Hemp Authority-certified.

In this article, we take a look at Medterra’s reputation, transparency, and product quality, as well as include a list of their top products.

Keep reading to find out whether Medterra is a brand you should trust.

Medterra is a small CBD company based in Irvine, California. It was founded in 2017 and claims to place a premium on providing customers with high-quality, pure, potent, and safe products.

Medterra has a rating of A+ on the BBB. You can find out more about how BBB decides on company ratings here.

According to our research, it seems that Medterra has never received a warning letter from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This likely means they’ve never made false claims about their products.

Medterra processes all of their products in a facility that follows CGMPs. The facility receives regular audits from the FDA. Their operations and supply chain specialist also audits suppliers to ensure CGMP standards.

However, the company doesn’t seem to be third-party certified in this area.

The company is U.S. Hemp Authority-certified and explains that they strive to use the highest quality CBD isolate in their products. They also have a medical advisory board with medical experts and veterinarians who help with research and product formulation.

All products from Medterra are third-party tested by an ISO 17025-compliant lab. This means that the lab has shown that they produce reliable and valid results. You can find batch-specific certificates of analysis (COAs) on each product page and on a separate page of the website here.

Comprehensive testing on the dedicated COA page shows you:

  • the cannabinoid profile
  • CBD and THC potency
  • contaminant test results, including:
    • pesticides
    • heavy metals
    • microbials
    • residual solvents

However, the COAs on the product pages include fewer details than those on the dedicated COA page, which is a bit confusing.

Additionally, COAs for some batches of a few products show higher CBD amounts than what you find on the label, but most of the products are close to what’s featured on the package label.

Medterra claims to use organic hemp to source its CBD. The hemp comes from farms that are part of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture Industrial Hemp Pilot Program.

Medterra sells a broad range of products, including CBD topicals, oils, gummies, capsules, and pet products. Note, however, that there isn’t much research about how CBD affects pets. It’s best to talk with your veterinarian before giving CBD to your pet.

Additionally, some Medterra CBD products are formulated to include vitamins, minerals, or supplements, such as melatonin to help you sleep. Anecdotally, some people say that these added ingredients are helpful, but it’s important to keep in mind that not much is known about how CBD interacts with other substances. Be sure to consult your healthcare professional if you’re considering mixing CBD with any other ingredients.

Many Medterra products are available in at least two potency formats. Most are made with broad-spectrum CBD or CBD isolate, though the company does sell some full-spectrum products as well.

The company prides itself on offering CBD products that are much more affordable than the competition. While there are no discount programs available at Medterra, the company does sell a few value bundles. It also has a loyalty program where you can get points for every dollar spent and redeem them for discounts.

Most of Medterra’s CBD product lineup contains few ingredients. The CBD isolate oil, for instance, only contains CBD and organic MCT coconut oil. Specialty products like immunity and antioxidant tinctures contain additional plant-based ingredients.

You can shop for Medterra CBD products directly on the brand’s website. Choose to shop by category or take a 1-minute quiz on the website to help you decide what type of CBD product might be a fit for you. Most products allow you to choose from different flavors and potencies. You can also decide to make a one-time purchase or subscribe.

Medterra also offers free shipping within the continental United States on orders over $75. Shipping times may vary, but the brand aims to ship most orders out within 1 to 3 business days.

You can find many positive customer reviews of each product on the Medterra website. There are also a handful of reviews on third-party websites, which are generally positive.

The company has a clear return policy on its website. If you’re unhappy with a product, you can request a refund (except for shipping costs) within 30 days of receiving it. However, this policy applies to new customers only.

The website also includes easy-to-locate contact information if you need help for any reason.

If you’re itching to try Medterra’s CBD products but don’t know where to start, try out their product finder quiz. It’ll help you zero in on the right CBD option for your needs.

A series of other questions will help narrow down your choices, so you’re not stuck needlessly scrolling through the product listings. For example, do you need help getting to sleep? Or are you looking to ease some type of discomfort?

We recommend settling on a product with detailed COA that includes contaminant testing and avoiding any ingestible CBD product that contains added vitamins, minerals, or supplements.

Compared with several other popular brands, Medterra offers products that are similar in price. The brand is also very transparent about its manufacturing and business practices, something that isn’t true of all CBD companies. Read on below to see how other CBD manufacturers are different from Medterra.

CBDistillery

Both Medterra and CBDistillery are popular with customers. However, Medterra does tend to have fewer potency options compared with CBDistillery. Pricing between the two brands is also comparable. For example, pricing for Medterra’s CBD isolate oil is $55.99 for 1,000 mg, while CBDistillery’s CBD isolate oil is $65 for the same potency.

Both brands offer discounts to military veterans and active duty personnel. CBDistillery also has a discount program for people who are long-term medically disabled. Neither offers discounts for people with lower incomes.

CBDfx

In terms of transparency, Medterra seems to beat out CBDfx. But it also offers fewer potency options than other brands, including CBDfx. Pricing is cheaper than CBDfx, though. And CBDfx doesn’t offer any isolate oil options. CBDfx has a loyalty program, but it doesn’t offer discounts to any special groups.

JustCBD

Medterra has a better reputation than JustCBD, which has been named in two lawsuits since 2019. So while JustCBD pricing is cheaper (a 1,000 mg bottle of CBD Oil Tincture Hemp Seed goes for $39.99), some people may prefer to buy from a company that’s highly transparent and doesn’t have any history of lawsuits, like Medterra.

Here’s a quick comparison of these brands:

Medterra offers a variety of CBD products like creams, oils, and capsules.

Take an oil by using a dropper to place a serving under your tongue. Take capsules like you would any pill — just swallow and go. Creams and other topicals get massaged into the skin and are ideal for targeted pain relief.

Dosing depends on the individual, so what works for someone else might not work for you. Expect some trial and error, especially if this is your first time trying CBD. Your best bet is to start with a low dose and work your way up to find the right dosage.

Most of what we know about CBD points to it being relatively safe, though research shows some people might experience side effects, including:

  • diarrhea
  • changes in appetite and weight
  • fatigue

Research has also shown that you’re more likely to experience the above side effects if you take CBD alongside a high-fat meal. So it’s best to avoid taking any form of CBD with fatty foods.

Check with a healthcare professional before trying CBD, especially if you’re on any medications, since CBD may interact with certain drugs.

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s best to avoid CBD.

Each product page features a link to the COA. You can also head over to Medterra’s dedicated COA page to view testing results.

If you take a broad-spectrum or isolate product, it won’t make you high. If you take a large dose of a potent full-spectrum product, you may ingest enough THC to feel high. If that’s something you want to avoid, stick to a low dose.

Some of the best Medterra CBD products include their isolate oil, pain cream, and gel capsules. These meet our high standards and have great customer reviews.

You can buy Medterra CBD oil directly from the Medterra website.

Medterra has a wide range of CBD product offerings. Their website makes it easy to find out how they source their hemp and extract their CBD.

CBD isolate products are great if you want to avoid THC. Medterra also offers a couple of broad-spectrum and full-spectrum products if you want to get additional benefits from other cannabis compounds.

Is CBD legal? The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the legal definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act. This made some hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC legal at the federal level. However, CBD products containing more than 0.3% THC still fall under the legal definition of marijuana, making them illegal at the federal level. Some states have legalized CBD, so be sure to check state laws, especially when traveling. Also, keep in mind that the FDA has not approved nonprescription CBD products, and some products may be inaccurately labeled.
